Prior to joining the Cincinnati Enquirer, Matthew Cupelli interned at the Indianapolis Star. He covered public safety, breaking stories about internal prison protests and false promises to neighborhoods riddled with gun violence.
He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Florida in May 2025. In college, he won awards for his statewide criminal justice coverage, leading to bylines in the Associated Press, Miami Herald, Tampa Bay Times, Sun Sentinel and more. His work has been featured by Politico.
With training in feature writing and radio reporting, he lead the university’s premiere narrative nonfiction publication, Atrium Magazine, and traveled to the Republican National Convention in 2024 while working as a producer for Gainesville’s local NPR-affiliate station, WUFT-FM.
He has won awards for graphic design and photography. He previously studied media production.
